Each year, children in our community arrive at the first day of school without the basic supplies their classmates take for granted. A backpack. Textbooks. A tablet to learn on.
For a child already carrying the weight of hardship — for a child who has lost a parent, or whose family cannot meet the simplest material needs — these gaps are more than practical. They are felt as a statement about their place in the world. They arrive at the schoolroom door already behind, already diminished, already ashamed of what they lack.
The Maimonides Heritage Center has long believed that the Rambam's commitment to education was not merely theoretical. He wrote and taught and practiced with the conviction that learning was the highest form of human dignity — and that every person, in every circumstance, had a claim on the opportunity to grow. That belief animates everything we do.
